The core objective of the South African Government as set out in 2004 is to halve poverty and unemployment by 2014. By being able to constantly evolve in a fast-paced ICT environment, the Information Technology Association of SA believes that we, as an ICT Community, can meet these objectives through cooperation, partnerships and sustainable development initiatives encouraging new businesses to proliferate and expand in order to pave the way for industry growth.

I attended the Technium Challenge Briefing at the Innovation Hub yesterday (5 Dec 07). The Technium Challenge is an international competition for innovative companies in the following sectors: IT, Digital Media, Digital Devices, Electronics, Opto-electronics, Life Sciences, Energy, Medical, Performance Engineering and Sustainable Technologies. Companies in SA is encouraged to enter and the prize includes a year's free hosting at one of the Techniums (Innovation Hubs) in Wales! The winner in SA will also be flown to Wales for the final leg of the competition. For more information on this exciting initiative visit www.technium.co.uk/challengesouthafrica or contact the ITA on ita@ita.org.za . Entrants need to supply a three page summary of their business plan by 31 January 2008 (guide available on Technium website). Succesful candidates will then be required to submit a full business plan by 11 April 2008. Good luck!

The Information Technology Association (ITA) was founded in 1934 and represents various companies concerned with the supply of information technology equipment, systems, software and services in the Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) Industry. The ITA stands at the threshold of a new era for the local ICT Industry. This representative body, together with its
Membership and industry partners, is poised to play a crucial role in the growth and development of the sector, as well as serving as a credible, effective channel of communication between various stakeholders.
One of the many functions of the ITA is lobbying and negotiating at government level on behalf of its members. Members have the opportunity of influencing the South African legislative mechanism through verbal and written submissions by the ITA. This has far reaching effects, which go beyond our members and positively impact on the ICT industry of South Africa as a whole.
